Transparent Beauty~When Clouds Touch #romance @atsuko12

I love photographers  who can tell a story through a single shot, Atsuko12, is one such an artist. As a matter of fact her photo of leaves reflecting through the folds of a wagasa, is one of the inspirations of When Clouds Touch. The ability to protect while being transparent enough to show life, is what drew me to the picture and bought this scene into my mind.~~

"Tell me you love me, Paisley. " “Aishiteiru, Malachi. I love you.” Without a pause or a second thought, she obeyed his command. He paused for a moment after snapping the shot, living the dawning knowledge revealed in her eyes that the statement was true. What was said casually now showed intensely and beckoned him into that reality.
“Mujhe bhi tumse iskh huwa hai, I have also fallen in love with you.” Malachi fell to his knees, crawling to her as if being reeled in by a lifeline. Until their lips touched, melded, and their combined breath became a sustaining life force, one for the other.

He felt her hands caress his back, his chest, fingers at the buttons of his shirt and he mimicked them, his fingers steadier and quicker, released the buttons at the top of her dress, pulling short when the gap revealed the tiny lace bra underneath. He flicked its front opening, exposing her flesh to his view – a sight immediately covered with his mouth. His need to be closer overwhelming his conscious mind which was telling him to move slower. But it wasn’t his mind, ruling him, it was her hands doing the directing, creating the momentum and he followed her emotions, her rush to fulfillment by caressing her touching her until she lost her control and cried out for him to stop.
He rolled to his back, breathing hard, chastising himself for trying to rush her, expecting to see the sky and realized they were shielded from the elements by the red panels of the umbrella. Its protection allowing only the softest light from the sun through, casting a soft glow on everything. He watched her as she adjusted her clothing, loving the pink on her skin, like the shell of a pearl.
“Is this how it always is under your umbrella, Paisley? Glimpses of light, beautiful color, shadows of leaves, silhouettes of birds, peaceful?”
Paisley lay quiet for a moment, then reached over to button his shirt and rest her head on his chest. Looking through the paper and seeing the world for the first time through his vision. The change in perception made the world a different place, one she had never really noticed.
“I rarely look up when I’m walking. It would probably be a little dangerous. My wagasa had always been my protection, my way of hiding from the world while spying on its way of living. Basically, it has been a tool. You are constantly showing me its real duty is that of love, Malachi. I don’t think I will ever see it the same again. Sobo wanted me to be able to go out and enjoy myself, little did I know she meant, grab a guy and make love under it.”
“I’m sure that’s not what she meant and I better not catch you under this umbrella with anyone else but me.” Kissing her quick, he pulled her to her feet, grabbing blanket and umbrella and pushing them in her hands. “Let’s go, it’s starting to rain.”
Collecting the picnic basket, he followed her footsteps to the car, laughing as they barely closed themselves within before the downpour

    It's All in the Cover~#WhenCloudsTouch #romance

What does the cover of a book mean to you?
Is it to give an idea of the contents or just a pretty tool of enticement? It has taken a while, designing several samples and finally,  I have the cover that says what my mind sees.

My first idea was to have an essence of people, a shadow in the clouds. I liked it, but no one got the vision.

The second, was to direct  attention to the wagasa. The Japanese umbrella Paisley uses to hide her skin from the rays of the sun. The symbol of her overprotective shield between her and the world. Pretty, but didn't work.

The third, my final choice, speaks nothing but romance. The tiny heart on the sleeve,  represents the exposure of the love the couple feel towards each other while showing the fragility of Paisley.
    Tada!! Now here we stand.

Even though I love this cover  of the girl, after a little while, it
just doesn't seem to fit. Until now. I've designed a different cover-the one on the left. It depicts the view from the excerpt. Perfect, riiight?

Authors:  Have you ever had problems choosing the right cover?
Readers: Have you ever looked at a book cover and thought the author had screwed it up?

Give My Sister Freedom~ When Clouds Touch #romance #WeNeedDiverseBooks

“You know, Oka-san and Oto-san, you two can be a little nicer to Paisley. She’s a very good girl for her age.” Yoshiko placed cups of tea in front of her parents before offering them cookies from the plate on the table.“You should hear how some of my friends talk about their sisters. You wouldn’t believe how they talk to their parents.”

“You are just a child, Yoshiko, and should stay in your place.” Her father sipped from his cup.
Ignoring his words, Yoshiko tidied the kitchen before sitting at the table with her parents.

“I’m really serious, Oto-san. You don’t listen to how sad she is, it’s in every sentence she speaks. Her tears are falling all of the time and I don’t think it’s fair. I never see her happy. You have to let her live or she will die alone like a very sad old woman.”
“You are always serious, my Yoshiko, but I will parent Paisley. You do not understand all she has been through. You have seen how it is when she gets a cold or is in the sun’s rays. You were not there when she died as a baby. My heart was broken.”
“I understand a lot. Maybe I wasn’t there when she died, but I am here when she cannot live. That’s so much worse. Anyway, I’m going to the sleepover to have fun. Something you two never let Paisley do.” Laughing along with her parents, she kissed their cheeks before leaving the room. “Promise me you will talk with her, Oto-san.” Her voice carried back into the room from the hallway. “I will talk with her.”

Candid- When the Publisher Hates Your Character #romance

"By the way, I really hated her father.  Really.  Really really.  I think I hated him more reading it the second time."
These are the encouraging words of my publisher at Inknbeans Press, yes, encouraging because it lets me know I got the point across. More important, it made Mr. Frank MuRong chuckle. This fellow cares none about your feelings. Mr. MuRong is the father of Paisley, one of the main characters from When Clouds Touch. He's stubborn, rude, opinionated, and dislikes Malachi, the love of Paisley's life.

When Clouds Touch is the embodiment of a story of soul mates, Paisley and Malachi.
Destined to meet since before birth, their story wraps us somewhere between loving and caring, wanting the best for someone, while wanting to see them happy, even when it is risky and they must obey the demands of family.
Paisley, a woman of Japanese decent, living with Albinism and heart disease, is meek, yet makes no apologies for seeking what she yearns. Hiding behind the protective fold of her wagasa, she yearns for freedom from her overprotective parents and the love of a man she's known only in her dreams, even at the cost of her health.
Malachi, a man who has visions of meeting an elusive shadow, uses his sense of humor and sensitive side to build their relationship. He's determined to win her love, even against the wishes of her parents.~

In a few days Mr. MuRong and his lovely wife will be a guest In The Chair and they will shed more light on their hard to swallow personality.

Amused and wanting to know more about my publisher's feelings for this couple, I asked her if I had given them  any redeeming qualities.

"As for her parents, there were no redeeming qualities.  I couldn't even excuse them as loving their daughter and wanting the best for her, because they only wanted the best for themselves."

Honestly, I couldn't write the MuRongs differently. As a writer, we all understand how this happens. The character comes out and well, shows their true character. You can try all you want to make them different, but somewhere in the novel, the real them is exposed. That's the type of people they showed themselves to be, dedicated and overzealous in the protection of their daughter. My next question was: Does it make the book seem bad? Does it work? And when your publisher comes back with a statement like this-

"Oh, absolutely.  It makes Paisley and Malachi's plight all the more powerful. This is probably the best thing you've ever written, it's like origami, perfectly folded into delicate layers that create a complex yet simple image. It's a touching and beautiful story.  I hope you're very proud of it."

    You know it works.
    • What is your reaction when someone tells you they don't like your characters?
    • Will it make you change things about them?
Please enjoy the other excerpts, sign up for emails and hopefully answer the survey.

Bet You Can't Catch Me.~ When Clouds Touch #romance

Paisley ran around in the sand like a puppy free from its kennel. Standing and burying her feet in the warm sand one minute and back to the water’s edge in the next and then back to the area where Malachi was busy setting up their paraphernalia.

“Did I ever tell you what I believed as a child?”

“No, what?” He listened with half an ear. His attention caught by her excited energy. Everything was new to her, as if she had been kept in a glass jar. Seeing and hearing everything in a world that could shatter at any moment. He could see from her every movement she was ready to burst; to stave off an anxiety attack and to calm her down, he sat her on a blanket and put a plastic shopping bag in her hands. “Here, sit. Tell me while you open this.”

She laughed when she pulled a red plastic shovel and a  pail from the bag and immediately began digging in the sand and filling the bucket. “You’re so silly, Malachi.”
     “Calmed you down, didn’t it?”
“Only for that moment.” She ran off and came back. “Oh, my God Malachi I can’t believe this. I’ve felt sand before, but it never felt like this. So warm and then wet. Hurry so we can get in the water. Stop being such an old man and let’s go play.” Her impatience was written all over her and he laughed. Running to grab the hat that rolled across the sand and plopping it back on her head.
“You have to hold the hat on or the wind will keep blowing it away.”
“I’ll do my best.” With one hand she held it on while trying to pull him to the water. “Let’s do this in a minute. Please, let’s get in the water, now.” Without waiting she ran. “Bet you can’t catch me.”
    “Okay, okay.”
Ramming the pole of the beach umbrella as deep in the sand as possible, he ran after her. Lifting her in mid stride, running on and continuing until he was chest deep in the water before lifting her small frame and dropping her unceremoniously. The cold from the water was like a shock of electricity and she screamed. Bouncing up once before rising, spluttering, wide eyed and sinking again. For a moment he stood frozen, terrified and cursing himself for not even knowing if she could swim. When she didn’t surface again, he dived in, petrified when he couldn’t find her. Swimming in agitated circles, he searched in vain, coming up when he could no longer breathe only to have his head trapped in a headlock and forced back down. Grabbing Paisley by the waist, he held her above water, examining her with the horrified expression of an anxious parent. The laughter escaping her at the mixture of relief and anxiety written all over his face.
“I thought I’d drowned you.” There was no laughter in his voice.
“I can swim you know.” She laughed again. Flapping her feet in the air in swimming motions.
“No, I didn’t know. How would I know? And where did you go? I didn’t see you under the water.” “Of course you didn’t, that was my intention. Serves you right for throwing me in when you didn’t know whether or not I would drown.” She splashed a few hands full of water in his face. And quickly swam away. Stopping a few feet out of his reach to taunt him with his inability to keep up. “I’m a lot faster in the water than I am on land.”
     “Wait until I get you.”

Deeper Than Holding You Prisoner~ When Clouds Touch #romance #Albinism

A little bit of envy tickled the greedy dark part of her mind. She wanted to be like her; to be able to step out into the world no matter the time of the day or the position of the sun.

She wanted to park her wagasa in the corner of the
porch, resting against a wall in the shade and not have it shielding the sky from her view. She wanted to let it do all of the hiding and self-protection it wanted, while she ran free and wild in the midday glare, feeling the burn on her skin and not worry about the screeching command of her parents to cover up, protect herself and come inside.
She wanted to be the one or at least join in the fun with her little sister.

Chasing the dogs, tripping and tumbling over their leashes as they ran around yipping at her ankles. She wanted to be able to fall and hit the ground, skin her knees and not sit crying while her parents hastened to clean the wounds, lecturing her about the delicacy of her heart...denying her the chance to live a real life.

“Oka-san, you see Yoshiko, that’s how I’ve always wanted to be: allowed to enjoy happiness. I can only take my puppy out at night, no wonder she loves Yoshiko more. No one will ever love me if I’m
    walled away from the world.”
Without saying a word, her mom joined her on the screened-in porch. Tapping the top of Paisley’s hands with the sunglasses she brought out for her, she sat on the swing, starting its movement with the push of her foot. “Paisley, if you were a mother, you would understand what I do is always in your best interest. I have been worried about you since your birth. Maybe a little overprotective, but what would you expect from a mother who holds her infant in her arms, watches her die and return to life at the age of one year? You have gone from one illness to another and I think your survival should be credited to our diligence.”

“Maybe so,” Paisley pushed on the glasses. “ But, I also have to give you credit for making my life depressing and unpredictable. Do you remember the ballet classes? For years I took them. Everyone said I was so good, talented. I thought I would become a ballerina and when the night came I would have a solo as an angel, I sneezed and you kept me home. It ruined things for everyone, not just me and you wouldn’t see that. You have to step back and let me live.

    Revolving Doors~When Clouds Touch #romance

    “I’m so damned embarrassed.”
Paisley put her trembling fingers to her forehead. Trying to subtly brush away whatever was crawling a slow path down the bridge of her nose, praying it wouldn’t turn out to be a spider. Her fear and the screaming, running, idiot she became in the presence of the creatures would make her look like a fool, as she ran from the building. The last thing she wanted to look like in front of him. “Oh, my God, my head is bleeding.”
“Yeah, it is.” The muscled chest released the word in the deepest baritone, unhurried and calm. “You’ll be okay. I got this.” He slid the straps of what was obviously a first-aid kit off his shoulders to the floor and began cleaning and patching her head. “Don’t be embarrassed, these things happen. Even though I’ve never seen anyone try to fly through the glass panes. Wasn’t your fault, really. The kid in the stroller on the other side of the partition, dropped a bottle or something and it jammed everything.”

Paisley looked into his face, mesmerized by the beautiful cloud-shaped gray area in his otherwise, hazel eyes. The feeling of knowing him was shaking her to the core. “How’d you know to come rescue me?”

     “I didn’t.”
She let her gaze drift from him to the bag on the floor and back to his face . “You have a medical bag. Did someone call 911?” She looked around before whispering. “Was I sprawled on the floor that long?”

He laughed out loud. Head thrown back, even white teeth glistening, Adam’s apple moving slowly within the beautiful brown skin of his throat. She was mesmerized. The spell broken as he explained his presence, merely coincidental since the EMS station was housed in the building. His breath, seasoned with peppermint, reminded her she was hungry and late for a lunch meeting.
Paisley pushed herself up, swung her legs to the floor, and with the aid of his palm on her lower back, she stood slowly. Not because she was in any pain, well not any pain from falling, but because she wanted to savor and brand to memory, the touch of his hand.

I'd Catch a Cold for You~ When The Clouds Touch #romance

“Malachi, are you sure you want to do this?”

Entering the bedroom from the bathroom, Paisley lay across the bed her freshly washed feet resting on Malachi’s stomach. With her head hanging nearly off the bed, she wiped her nose and tossed the tissue in the wastebasket. He lifted one of her feet. Running the nail of his pointer finger from heel to toes, enjoying the small shudder she gave before he began rubbing oil on her flesh.

“You mean the massage? I would hold your feet forever. I would rub your tiny alabaster toes until they fell off. I would eat them for dessert, if you begged me to. Mind you, you’ll have to beg though.”
“No, silly.” she sniffed softly, trying to bury the sound under a giggle. “I mean, do you really want our families to meet? This is a huge thing, especially in my father’s eyes. It is essentially asking for my hand in marriage.” She sniffed again.

“Are you catching a cold?” Malachi reached for her hands and pulled her up, tucking her under the blankets in two swift movements. “Oh, damn. Your parents are going to kill me.” He jumped from the bed and ran into the kitchen, from where she could hear the frantic slamming of cabinets and the refrigerator door. Returning with a bowl of sliced lemons and a bottle of water, placing the water on the nightstand, Malachi slid under the blankets next to her. “Are you okay? Does anything hurt? Should I call your mom?”

“Oh, sure, yes call her so you really will be killed. You’re in my bed, we’re barely clothed,” She removed the lemons from his hands, put them on the nightstand on her side of the bed and tossed the water to the floor. “My dad,” She caressed the smooth expanse of his chest. “Would skin you alive right here in this room.” Throwing her leg across his lower limbs she sat up and straddled him. “There are so many other... fun things I would rather do with your skin.”

Rolling her back to her side of the bed, he reached for a lemon and placed it between her lips. “Yeah, but I’d rather you suck on this for a few minutes. Just to make sure you aren’t getting a sore throat or something. I knew I shouldn’t have taken you on that ride.” He looked into her face, worry so deep in his eyes, wrinkles were forming on his brow. Reaching up with fingers that trembled, Paisley rubbed at the offending lines. Tears burned her eyes and before they could roll out she turned her face away. Removing the lemon from her mouth and tried to sit up. “Does it hurt so bad, Cintaku?” Malachi refused to let her move, wiping the tears with his fingers.
“No, yes. It hurts that I make you worry. I don’t want another person in my life upset over whatever ails me. So worried that they jump at my every sneeze. Grow lines,” She fingered his forehead again. “Because I shiver or move a little slow. I don’t want that for you, for us Malachi and that’s what I need to know, are you sure you want to do this. Being with me could be the pits...I rather we just break apart, now.”

“Cintaku sedalam samudra setinggi langit diangkasa kepadamu, which means, my love to you is deep as the ocean and as high as the sky above.” He chuckled softly. “There isn’t a pit in the world that would keep me from being with you, Cintaku.”

“Awww, Malachi you’re such a romantic. Am I really your love?”
“My only love. There was never one before you and there will never be one after you.”

Under the Sea of Misery~ When Clouds Touch #romance

“This has been such a fun day, Malachi. I don’t think it would have been the same if I would have come as a child. My goal was much different then.”
“You had a mission for when you would come to the beach? What? Were you going to burrow a tunnel to China? Swim to the other side of the world?”
“I sure was going to try. My goal was to disappear and go back to where I belonged.”
Malachi laughed. The seriousness in her face in total contrast of how she’d looked just a moment before. “Where did you think you belonged?”
“Now, you have to promise not to laugh.”
“I would never laugh at you.”
“Yeah, you would.” She tossed a shovel of sand in his direction.
“Yeah, you’re probably right.” Holding the food in his hands above his head and out of reach of the sand he sat next to her on the towels. “Now if you want to eat literal sandwiches, just let me know which plate you want.”
     “I’ll stop.”
“Okay,” He handed her a plate. “Now, regal me with your plans and maybe on our next trip, we will try it out.”
“So, when I was a little girl, about six or seven, I saw this movie about a mermaid. An old movie where this lady and a mermaid who looked exactly alike, traded places so they could see how the other lived. I became convinced that is what happened to me, except I was sure my parents had stolen me and if they would just return me to the waters, I would be healthy and free. When I confronted them, they laughed. I hate being laughed at. So, I fixed them and stopped walking. I lay on the floor and the furniture. Grabbing and dragging myself around, refusing to use my legs for weeks. They brought me to doctors, but I wouldn’t walk. I told them I needed my sea legs and they should bring me to the beach or a pool. Of course they fear public pools and so Oto-san had a huge pool dug into the backyard and paid for the best instructors to teach me to swim. I just knew if they ever brought me to the ocean, I would jump into the water and wave goodbye as soon as I were out of their reach and never return. Which is probably why they never brought me to the beach.”
“You’d better be glad you never told me that story before or I would have never brought you here.”
Malachi grabbed her by the feet and pulled her towards him. Eyelashes-away as he examined her toes and rubbed her legs until he reached the waist of her bathing suit. Where he began to tickle her. “I had to make sure you weren’t growing fins or scales. I would have to pull them off.”
“You forgot to look here, Malachi.” Paisley lifted the end of the tied bow at her breast.
“Oh no, I didn’t forget there,” he fingered the material. “I thought I would give it a few minutes, takes a while for scales to cover breasts, so when I look I want to do a thorough nonstop exam.” He kissed her lips and sat up.
“You thought of everything didn’t you, Malachi.”
“I tried. Sorry there are no kids around here for you to hear squeal or no trash in the sand, but I promise, after lunch I can make you squeal and we can do dirty things in the sand.”
“Wha...” Malachi laughed at her expression, tickled at the bright blush on her skin. “Not until after I eat though and put on some more sun block. You’ve sudden gone all pink on me.”
“The idea, on the beach...I’m not even hungry anymore. I think I’m too excited.”
“Hmmm, I think I’m hungry. Besides, the anticipation will make the memory that much sweeter.” He tossed a banana in her direction. “Sustenance will make it last longer.”

A Father's Protection Can Break His Own Heart.~When Clouds Touch #romance

    “I will talk with her.”
The chair legs scraped loudly on the kitchen floor when Frankie MuRong pushed away from the table and strolled through the sliding glass doors to the backyard. He knew where he could find Paisley, on his way in the house through the patio door, he’d seen her diving into the pool.

The pool he’d had built for her after she watched a movie about a mermaid. As a child she became convinced she was a mermaid and they had stolen her and removed her ability to swim. She'd demanded lessons and learned well, determined to one day get to the ocean and swim far away. Where she would finally be happy.
Choosing to sit under one of the many trees provided to keep the area well shaded, he watched his eldest daughter. Her strokes were swift, long, hard, and angry. Back and forth she swam across the Olympic sized pool like a fish stuck in a bowl. Over and over until without warning, she stopped in the middle, treading water and crying. Her back was to him but he could hear her clearly. Her sobs echoed through the water, vibrating into his soul and he wanted to cry with her. He’d only seen her as a rebellious, recalcitrant child. Never imagining her to be so sad and heartbroken.

Looking up as a hand was placed on his shoulder, he stared into the weeping eyes of his wife. The tears falling from her eyes simultaneously with the ones dripping from the tips of his lashes, landed on the back of his hand and mingled. Sitting next to him on the cool grass, she whispered into his ear. Silently, he listened. He listened to her reminder of how his great-grandfather had not accepted the love of his own Chinese grandfather, and the family had not been destroyed. He remembered how he’d felt when Annie’s family wanted to keep them apart. How angry and frustrated he had been when his parents believed it would be best if he continued his education before he married her. Eventually, he nodded in agreement to Annie’s whispers.

Quietly, they watched Paisley plunge under the water, propel upward in a rise as if she would break free to reach the heavens, only to return to earth. Where she beat the water in anger until it rose and slapped back in its incapability to give her what she wanted. Spotting them, she swam to where they were, wiping her face and wringing her hair. Her habitual demeanor of porcelain beauty and obedience back in place.

Your Love is Smothering Me. ~ When Clouds Touch #parenting

"Paisley, control yourself. We are in public.”

Her father’s blue eyes had darkened in his anger and she knew her window of making a point and winning the argument had been closed. Lowering her head in submission, she relinquished her determination in silence.
She may be of an adult age, finally living on her own, but she was still the obedient daughter Frankie MuRong had reared and she would not shame him by acting like a recalcitrant child.

“Fine, I’ll go with you, but I’m hungry, now.”
Backing away from his grasp, she shouldered the straps of her bag before stepping around him and into the enclosure of the revolving door.

As the doors went through their cycle, Paisley silently listened to her father’s biting voice as he called in an order to his favorite Asian restaurant. No one was safe from his expectation of perfection. She automatically moved to the right, opened her wagasa to shield her skin from the sun, before following the direction indicated by the pressure of her father’s hand on the small of her back. Her reaction no where near what she’d felt when Malachi touched her. Then she’d wanted to lean back and learn more about him, now, all she wanted to do was get away from her father.
Once in the car, she heatedly joined in the broadcast tirade between her parents.
“That’s not true. I wasn’t going to try and hide anything. I would have told you if you’d given me a chance.”
“Honey,” Her dad broke in. “She had the hair covering her forehead. I wouldn’t have seen,” He paused to reach over and lift her bangs, but Paisley pulled away. Not being thwarted, he continued his description. “There’s a silver dollar sized, angry red, purple and blue knot plastered in the middle.”
“I’d just come from the hairdresser, Oka-san. I had my hair cut into a new style.” Paisley immediately clasped her hands over her mouth, she hadn’t intended to let that part slip, knowing exactly how her mother would react. Now she would really hear it.
“You went to a dirty crowded, public salon?” Her mother’s shocked screech filled the car.
“Oh, my God!” She raised her voice above the level of her mom’s predictions of foreboding. “Oka-san, stop. I had bangs cut, that’s all. Nothing serious. It wasn’t near as bad as that. The place was beautiful, perfectly clean. No one so much as sneezed or coughed. You two worry too much.”
“Worry too much? You should see the dress she has on.” Her father exaggerated. “No sleeves, thin. As if she doesn’t know the sun will burn her. ”
Her parent’s yelling in unison was too much and she could feel herself becoming stressed.
“Stop. I was well hidden under one of the largest most expensive umbrellas ever. No sun touched me. Besides,  I thought our goal was to finally let me live a normal life. People have accidents all of the time and they don’t die. It’s just a bump.”
“For other people maybe, but for you that’s another story. You know...”
“I know. I’m a person with an immunodeficiency.”
    “And a bad heart..”
“A heart that hasn’t bothered me in months. An immune system which hasn’t failed me nor caught any illnesses in nearly the same amount of time. You two have got to let me grow up. To be in control of my own health.”
